Interview with My Own Sin

Hardcore driven guitars, ethereal keys and a strong female voice!  What can I say about Florida based "My Own Sin"?

Dark and hauntingly intense!  V.M.U catches up with lead front women Danie!

VMU:  Hey how are you?

MOS:  Still breathing.

VMU:  Where are you from and who is the current line up?

MOS:  We’re from Jacksonville, Orange Park and Middleburg, FL. Current line up is:
Phillip & Brandon on Guitars
Joe on Bass
Tim on Drums
Lisa on Keys
Danie on Vocals.

VMU:  How did all of you come together?

MOS:  Through a lot of trial and error.

VMU:  How many releases have you put out?

MOS:  Only a demo.

VMU:  Very intense sound! Could you tell us where the releases were recorded and who produced?

MOS:  I would tell you where they were recorded, but then I’d have to shoot you. Actually, we’re not very proud of the recording we currently have and neither is the person who recorded it, therefore, we’d rather not release that information.

VMU:  Were they recorded digital or analog?  (if computer what programs)

MOS:  Analog, however, we requested digital.

VMU:  Could you tell us what gear you use live and in studio?  (in detail)

MOS:  We use the same gear on both grounds and it’s a rather large variety: 1 Marshall 1/2 stack, 1 Crate 1/2 stack, 1 full stack Bass cab. System, name of it I cannot recall, 1 Korg Triton workstation / sequencer, 1 Ensonique 32 voice sequencer, a GT3, GT5, GT6 Processing pedal for all strings, an Alesis Voice Processor, and a 5 piece Pearl drum Kit.

"These days, it’s getting harder and harder to tell radio bands apart. " - Danie

VMU:  Do you guys prefer live or studio recording?

MOS: Live, but that’s probably because we haven’t seemed to like any of our recordings. Besides, we love watching the fans’ reactions, specially the new ones who have never heard us, then do, then freak the f**k out! It’s awesome!

VMU:  Who does all the main writing in the group?

MOS: We all do the writing.

VMU:  How do you feel about the mainstream and the over seas music scene?

MOS:  We have all said it again and again, they mainstream, we feel, is going down hill. These days, it’s getting harder and harder to tell radio bands apart.

VMU:  Who are your musical influences?

MOS:  I wouldn’t say a band has influenced our music, but I would say that there are bands out there who have influenced each of us personally: Slipknot is a primary, then there is Mudvayne, Lacuna Coil, Korn, Static-X, Mushroom Head, Soul Fly, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, TOOL, A Perfect Circle, Otep, Kitty, DefTones, etc... There are so many of them, just for the simple fact that there are 6 people in the band there’s no way I could name them all.

VMU:  (optional)  Was the recordings done live or 1 on 1?

MOS: 1 on 1

VMU:  What was the worst experiance playing live?

MOS: We have actually had 3 pretty bad experiences. We really do not like dwelling on the bad and rather we like to focus on the good and the future. So, I rather not go into them.

VMU:  What is the indie scene like in your home town?

MOS:  I wouldn’t specify the scene here an "Indie". There are an ass load of bands here. No competition though. We’re all very supportive over each other. The bands around here range from Pop, to Punk, to Hardcore and Goth Metal, to Rap Rock, to some shit that just isn’t right... lol...

VMU:  I know its pretty much the same here in California, do you get a lot of competition from other groups?

MOS:  No, no competition. Besides, I do believe that there are no other bands here in our town like us.

VMU:  Do any of you own a home studio?

MOS:  No, wish we did though.

VMU:  What do you express in your lyrics?

MOS:  A lot of discust with the human race, a lot of anger towards stupidity, and a lot of hurt for things that keep happening that just aren’t right. You might say that I’m an angry person, but I don’t see it that way. I know I do think too much sometimes, the band would say all of the time. I just get very frustrated with the world and the people who are destroying it and each other.

VMU:  How do you feel about other groups expressing their own beliefs in thier lyrics? (political or religious)

MOS: I really do not like it when people bring in religion to their music, but to each their own... ya know, unless of course you are a band under a religious label. However, in our band, each of us do have different religious or non-religious beliefs, therefore, we will never put religion into the lyrics. And, on the political we just don’t give a shit! It’s like worrying about the lesser or greater of the evils. It’s a waste of energy. No matter what, we’re all f**ked!

VMU:  (for the singer)  How did you get into singing and did you have any lessons in the past?

MOS:  According to my parents, I have been singing since I started talking. Since the, they haven’t been able to get me to shut the hell up. As far as lessons, I went to a school of the arts through 7th and 8th, then onto High School for the arts all to where I took music classes. Then after I studied 2 years with a Jacksonville University Professor 1 on 1

VMU:  Do any of you have other side projects in the works?

MOS:  No comment... lol... We know things that some of us know, that the others don’t know we know. But for all that matters, My Own Sin is all of our MAIN VIEN!

VMU:  What are in the works now?  Any tours or new releases?

MOS:  Right now we will be showcasing at the Connexion Festival here in Jacksonville in front Reps, Producers, etc. that for now are unknown by name. We are also going to go back into the studio after October 23rd to try to get a better recording, then we will start working on merchandise.

VMU:  Thanks very much for your time!  Any last words?

MOS: Actually yes, we know that we now have fans pretty much all over the world. Thank you for spreading the SIN disease. We do it for you, and we mean that from every ounce of sweat we throw at you. Thank you so much for being there for us! It’s absolutely true, we would be nothing without you! Keep spreading the word of SIN, My Own Sin.
